Dehydration Can Happen

Everyone is at risk of dehydration—and children and seniors are at a particularly high risk. That’s why it’s important to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, especially when spending a good amount of time outdoors.

The following are signs of dehydration:

  • Confusion
  • Dark urine
  • Delirium
  • Decreased urination
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth or skin
  • Fainting
  • Feelings of thirst
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Muscle cramps
  • Rapid heartbeat and/or breathing
  • Unconsciousness

Fortunately, there are ways to help prevent dehydration in the first place.

First, before heading outdoors, check the weather. If you see that the weather is going to be especially hot that day, try to plan activities before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays aren’t quite as strong.

Second, drink water throughout the day, particularly before, during and after any type of physical activity. While outdoors, it’s important to continually sip water. By the time your body actually feels thirsty, you may already be dehydrated.

Finally, add water-filled foods into your diet to help replenish your body’s fluids. Plenty of fruits and vegetables contain mostly water, including strawberries, melon, pineapple, oranges, lettuce, celery, peppers and cucumbers.

If you do begin to experience symptoms of dehydration, head indoors and begin to replenish your fluids by drinking water, an electrolyte-replenishing drink like Pedialyte, or a sports drink. There’s no need to guzzle the liquid—aim to drink about 2 quarts of cold liquid over the next few hours.
